smoking and not shifting

I have a 92 mustang with a 2.3L turbo and a automatic transmission. The car will not shift into overdrive but the other gears work fine. Does the transmission from that year have electronic overdrive. Also while hotrodding the car will get to 4000rpm then when I let off of it white looking smoke pours out of the exhaust. Any ideals are appreiciated.
thanks
Scott

Re: smoking and not shifting

Hi scott. I'm afraid the white smoke sounds very much like the turbo seal has gone or is going. The turbo bearing is lubricated by an oil feed pumped from the engine and is most likely leaking and being puffed out in the exhaust.

Does the engine use a bit of oil?.

You may find it will be ok for a while but my advice would be to get it checked by someone that has turbo experiance and decide whether the seal can be replaced or whether a new turbo is the option.

I'm not sure about the tranny but maybe someone else might know off hand. Does it have a button for selecting overdrive and if so then these are commonly electrically operated which probably means the button/wire/or a solenoid may be the problem.

Let us know how you make out with the prroblems as it helps for knowledge for others with similar problems.
