So my 302 as having issues turning over. when i crank it it turns over a few times and then sometimes you will hear a loud "crash boom clank" followed by a rattle??? i have a video of this noise but i wasn't able to post it on here. also after turning it over without starting it and regardless if this noise happened you can hear a residual "click click click" coming from the engine. also one time it got stuck and it wouldn't turn over at all, i had to turn it by hand only the slightest bit and then it was fine.
What are the issues or 'history' leading up to this? Recent work? Removed or adjusted distributor? I agree with JWKO on this, but it would be nice to have more info, so we can point you in the right direction.
If timing is the problem- you can do this to get it close so that you can start it.
1. Move cylinder #1 to as close to top dead center as you can. Postion harmonic balancer at -8 to -12. Pop the cap on your distributor and turn your distibutor rotor as close as you can to #1. This should at least make starting easy till you can time the car properly if this is the cause.
