Ticking sound (exhaust leak)?

I'm trying to track down an exhaust leak (I think). The ticking goes away after 30-60 seconds after a cold start. I did find on my driver side front cylinder a little soot on the manifold pipe as it enters the base of the manifold. Are these manifolds one piece or is the pipe beveled on the inside?

Here is a pic. You can see some soot on the left side on the front cylinder.

Would that be enough to cause a ticking sound? Do I need to replace the whole manifold or just the gasket?

It sounds like this mustang but it's not mine.

Re: Ticking sound (exhaust leak)?

Get a piece of hose and listen through it in the area you hear it. You may have to try it a couple of times to get it down to where it is.

Re: Ticking sound (exhaust leak)?

Thanks for the reply Bert. I have some 3/4 inch heater hose that should work good for that. I was curious if the manifold at the base is one piece or some sort of flanged design. All the pics I saw online only showed one side. That one cylinder is the only one I saw soot on. Doing some searching online it seems these manifolds get cracks. Also, the ac drain leaks onto the pipe off the manifold and can cause problems (what a brilliant design that was).

Re: Ticking sound (exhaust leak)?

The manifold is a one piece unit. Even though the A/C condensation drains on the exhaust, we haven't had problems on any of our fleet. You could try tightening the flange bolts and see if any are loose.

Re: Ticking sound (exhaust leak)?

I found a couple of TSB but not sure if they apply to my year.

TSB #04-10-03 has been replaced by TSB #04-21-06. It woulgn't be a ticking sound. It would just be a louder exhaust. It calls for an A/C drain guard for the condensation. Here's some pictures of what area they leak looks like. welding stainless Ford exhaust pipe - WeldingWeb™ - Welding forum for pros and enthusiasts

Re: Ticking sound (exhaust leak)?

Thanks again Bert! Excellent info! So that does not sound like my problem. I'll check it out tomorrow. My guess is I need a new drivers side manifold. I checked out the oem and pretty expensive. I might have to look at other options.

It may be just a gasket. If you need a manifold, you can search here. Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market
