confused Trouble with first and second gear....

I have a 1986 manual Mustang LX 5.0 V8..... and the problem is that I'm having problems putting my car into first and second gear. And it slightly makes like a grinding noise some of the time, and it sometimes squeaks when you press the clutch. The problem persist more as the car warms up. Is there anyone that can help me with this problem???? I feel so stuck so any information of what might be the problem would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Re: Trouble with first and second gear....

It kind of sounds like the first / second synchromesh unit may be what is giving you problems. If the teeth themselves are worn they may have trouble engaging and switching gear which may result in hard shifting, and those pesky grinding noises.

Although this doesn't eliminate thrust bearings, blocker rings or inserts, or synchronizer keys or springs.

Also when was the last time your transmission fluid was changed?
have you ever had the transmission serviced, or thoroughly checked over by a shop?
Has the transmission ever been overhauled/ rebuilt?
Do you have a tendency to shift hard/ and or powershift?

Thats all I have right now, sorry I couldn't pinpoint the exact problem for you. Someone else may know more/ may even correct me.

Re: Trouble with first and second gear....

I agree with AMARTHFEA- espically if your other gears and reverse are fine.
