I recently replaced both axle shafts on my 02 Mustang which required me to open the differential. Just after I closed up the diff and added the fluid, I found a single ball bearing measuring about a quarter inch in diameter on the garage floor. I do not know if it came from inside the differential. Does anyone know where this ball bearing may have come from if it in fact belongs in the differential?
I think most bearings inside the diff are tapered with roller type bearings. The axle bearings are often ball bearings. Did any of the axle bearings have damage?.
It may have been on the floor from something else.
