02 Focus. Front end clunking noise when turning or going over a bump - Ford Forums - Mustang Forum, Ford Trucks, Ford Focus and Ford Cars

What things could cause my 02 Focus SVT to have a clunking noise when turning hard or when going over a bump? Sounds like suspension or maybe frame noise. Maybe engine mount? What would you check?

If you can get the noise setting still and turning hard, have someone turn the wheel and another under and around to listen to where it's located.

Check to be sure all nuts at the top and bottom ( especially at the top) on the struts are tight. If the center nut at the top is not tight it will pop when turning and braking.

Did not think about the strut nuts not being tight. Had the struts replaced some time back and this has been going on since not too long after that. Had not thought about that possibility. You guys give great advice. Thanks.

I changed my struts a few months ago and it did exactly what yours is doing. In my case it was the top center nut on the passenger side. I drove the car up on some ramps and while I layed under it, had my son rock the steering back and forth hard. Listened from under, and then from the top with open hood. At that point the pop / clunk was clear as day where it was coming from.

Let us know when you find the noise! Only way we all know for sure.

Front Anti Roll Bar Link Rods are a very common fault .

That^, and if the center nut is not tight enough, and has been clunking around, it would probly be a good idea to replace the top plate there, chances are it might be bent up a little too.
