2000 focus lx 5 speed - loss of power

while driving suddenly the speedometer goes to zero, volume on the radio goes down, small loss of engine power possibly ( hard to tell when doing 70 on the freeway ). Recently replaced battery cables which did not help. Thanks, any help is appreciated.
