I'm on a college budget and came across a 2000 Focus SE wagon with 91k at $3800 for sale by private owner. He says he was meticulous in maintenance and it looks very clean. But I've heard mixed reviews about this year and model. Is this a relatively reliable and cost-effective car? The low cost, gas savings, and cheap maintenance is what attracts me, but is it worth it if it's a pre '05 year?

The wagon's are a great buy, especially as they're no longer available. 91K isn't very high, and as long as everything works, and the owner can give you paper records with previous maintenance then it should be a good vehicle for a few years before any major problems. If it has the 2.0 TPI 2valve engine, it's a lower output (115hp vs the Zetec 130hp), but is less complex in design and is fairly cost effective should anything go wrong.

Again, be sure to take it on a thorough test drive. Drive on gravel roads, paved roads and dirt roads to make sure nothing rattles (mostly suspension). Check that all fluids aren't jet black, including brake and power steering fluid.
