My wife has a 2000 Focus sedan and the rear passenger door does not lock or unlock with in car switch or the remote, it can be done manually though. Anybody have an idea of what might be causing this?

burned up lock actuator very common problem also make sure the door lath is operating properly

Door opens/closes fine when lock is maunually unlocked so I'm pretty sure the latch is fine. Is it expensive/hard to replace the actuator?

The rear doors are a little more difficult beacause you need te remove the outer door handle and the door latch. the acutator itself is probally a 100.00 to 150.00 with about an hour of labor to install

There was a recall issued to prevent this problem also. Have you had your VIN# checked for the recall? Ford will replace the faulty actuator or latch free of charge.
