i have a 2001 ford focus, automatic.

last night the o/d off light came on without me pushing the button and stayed on for about 50 miles, then started flashing and my car was jerking like it was switching from o/d to not that went of for about 1 mile, then it just stayed on again. this morning, the light didn't come on at all on my 60 mile commute to work.....any ideas?

First check the Fluid level in the Transmission...

A flashing OD light means a malfunction is occurring, and the on-board diagnostics (OBD) has detected it. It's similar to a Check Engine light when an engine control malfunction is occurring. There is a code stored in the PCM (power train control module), it can be retrieved with a scan tool, and will give a decent indication as to what the malfunction is..... It could be something simple, or something big, hard to say at this point.

Go to Autozone, or Advance Auto, and have them try to read the codes.

The O/D light is flashing because the PCM (power train control module) has detected a concern. Whenever that light is flashing, the switch will be ignored by the PCM. Drive the vehicle as little as possible to minimize further damage. I believe the PCM will enter fail safe strategy and possibly inhibit 3rd gear operation if it has recognized 3rd gear as the issue.

why wouldn't it have come on again this morning?

Give it time, it will...Was it very cold this morning? Again check your Fluid in the Tranny...Let the car warm up first...and have it on level service.

I would advise you go and try to pull the OBDII codes.

If you wish to just ignore this or the O/D Light Flashing or staying on, you will end up in a transmission shop for repairs.

it was very cold this morning, ice on the windows, ok will check the fluid & the codes. i just had a transmission put in not too long ago, put it was a rebuilt one.
