My focus started knocking fairly loud recently so I took it to a local shop where I got no help whatsoever. Before I took it in, I took the valve cover off and checked springs, lifters, and rocker arms just to make sure and that all checked out fine. I can't do extreme engine work myself, so I took it in. I got a call back with the guy telling me well it's nothing in the valve train (thanks genius I told you that when I dropped the car off). Of course, the first thing after was "It needs an engine". Without being able to tell me what is wrong with it, this assumption isn't to my liking. The knocking sounds like it's coming from the middle of the engine, so I am kinda skeptical about it having spun a bearing. Any suggestions on what I could do? Also, if I can't find anyone around to work on it, where could I get a rebuilt engine and what is an app. price?

Make sure you get a proper diagnosis from the shop about what went wrong with the original engine. If the shop cannot specify anything and the car is still driveable, take it to another shop for a second, if not a third opinion on the matter.

Most properly rebuilt engines with a warranty will run around $1500-2000 with a core charge on top of that, so say an extra 200-300. Installation is extra as well, which is the major bill as a lot of the original parts such as alternator, AC compressor will have to be bolted onto the new engine. Local salvage yards will be your best bet. If you can find a banged up car with low mileage and the engine still runs, you'll have it made.
