Make sure you get a proper diagnosis from the shop about what went wrong with the original engine. If the shop cannot specify anything and the car is still driveable, take it to another shop for a second, if not a third opinion on the matter.
Most properly rebuilt engines with a warranty will run around $1500-2000 with a core charge on top of that, so say an extra 200-300. Installation is extra as well, which is the major bill as a lot of the original parts such as alternator, AC compressor will have to be bolted onto the new engine. Local salvage yards will be your best bet. If you can find a banged up car with low mileage and the engine still runs, you'll have it made.
