The alternator failed 2 weeks ago in my son's Focus SVT. Well, we had it replaced and it failed again yesterday. What would cause it fail again so soon besides being a bad alternator?
I'd get the system load tested to make sure the charging system is sending the right amount of power through the system. I know on the alternators there's a relay, behind a small plastic cover that can burn out - but is generally unheard of after only two weeks.
Was the alternator a rebuilt unit, or new? Either way, you should be covered under warranty for a replacement unit if it was in fact the alternator that was found to be the problem.
Curious though, is your sun running any performance mods on the car on top of what came on the vehicle, stock? Such as under/over drive pulley's?
Not sure if the alternator was rebuilt or new. They are running diagnostic tests to see what may have caused the failure. He is not running performance mods...just stock.
Geeze. I always prefer spending a few extra bucks (OK, $100 or so) and buying new. Most shops will give you a rebate if you hand them the old one at the time of purchase, which helps. I replaced my alternator in my Taurus this spring to the tune of $428 - brand new with three year, unlimited mileage warranty. The only thing I don't like, is when I check the fluids, it's the ONLY polished piece under the hood and looks gravely out of place!
They had another to choose from, it was $389 with a 90 day warranty. I decided to go with the Bosch 'premium' alternator. Which not only came polished, but came with a great warranty as well. You should see it it's a nice looking unit...makes my engine compartment look well, 9 years old, lol. I'll post a pic when I get the chance.

I bet it does brighten up the engine compartment. Be sure to post a pic when you get a chance
