2007 Ford Focus - how to clear MIL / idiot lights / messages - Ford Forums

Hi folks,

I have a smashed 2007 Focus (2.0l Duratech, auto) that I'll be using the engine of in a Lotus 7 replica. The Focus is still complete, but rolled.
The motor starts well, and revs up with a throttle kick.
However:
1) The revs only die back slowly
2) Messages appear on the dash:
"SPEED LIMITED MODE" &
"ENGINE MALFUNCTION" (or similar)
3) The engine light + orange + red lights appear

I have an ELM327 based tool, and found these DTCs:
U1039 - speed sensor bad &
U1900 - transmission problem

Fair enough to both! The CV joints got ripped apart in the accident, and it certainly can't drive anywhere.

I then reset the DTCs, and restarted the motor. There's no change in the car - the messages still show, rpm response the same, all lights still on. The PC reports NO faults still.

Q. Is there some other magic to having the dash reset?

I'll answer my own question:

I was misinterpreting the OBD tool.
Code U1039 - speed sensor bad was coming up whenever the motor was running, as a pending code.
This was enough to put it into limp home mode.
Once I rewired the wheel sensors in the front hubs, the messages went away, and the motor behaves normally.
