The AC light indicator goes on when the defrost position is selected. This happens when we start our 2000 focus for a warm up and put the heater control into the defrost position. I do not know if the compressor engages but find this rather strange. Push the AC button and the light goes out. Any idea as to why this is happening?

Thats quite normal, it's to clear the windscreen even quicker via de-humidification.

Thank you. But can you tell me if I leave it on will it go off eventually?
And does this mean the compressor is running? Is it okay to run at -30 below celcius?

Yes the compressor runs in the A/C position and it is designed that way.

however, even if the "light" isnt on, the compressor will still run
