Hi guys I am new to the forum and am glad to find other great ford focus enthusiasts. I drive a 2002 ford focus LX with about 60k miles,great all around car. I need your help or advice for my issue.

My cars engine light is on (on the left side of the gauge cluster) and the issue is my car seems to have a problem accelerating from 20mph to 30mph its fine after that but then the car does the same thing from 50 mph to 70 mph. The car seems to be having trouble finding gears but runs good after it reaches a steady cruising speed. I'm thinking it could be timing, transmission, or maybe computer. I do the normal maintenance (ie; oil, tires) but have yet to do a tune up. Also I was told from my brake shop (brake max) that my shock is worn in the left rear.

Your help and advice is greatly appreciated.

I take it this is a petrol auto? The warning light needs immediate attention, maybe a transmission code is in there, you don't say whether the engine itself runs ok in neutral. Needs a diagnostics plug-in to read any fault codes stored.

The car runs good in neutral. But has the issue on the original message. Have you ever had an issue similar to this ?

Yes, just recently funnily enough, never seen an auto Focus in for repair before, then 2 came in in successive weeks, both were down to a shift solenoid in the box, repairable in the vehicle.

Is that type of repair costly ? And how much do dealer repair shops charge for diagnostics on average ? Does the shift solenoid normally reapir the issue with no other adverse affects ?

Without confimation about the code stored I couldn't really say, however the repairs I did charged out at 2 hrs labour including diagnosis, then oil, sealant and the solenoid which was about £60 IIRC

I got some back yard advice. One of buddies said that disconnecting the negative battery cable would reset the computer. The light is gone and the car is running good for the most part, but I'm still going to get it checked out.

Bad back yard advice. You should get the code checked out BEFORE taking measures to turn the light off. If the problem existed, and doesn't re-register in the computer, and you cleared the code... well you may be screwed unless the computer finds the problem again.

hi i have a uk ford focus Y reg 1.6zetec with the same problem,and i have had it on a machine and it come up with the code p0732 gear 2 incorrect ratio,
Could this be the solenoid
