Engine turns off when braking Focus 2007

Our 2007 Ford Focus is malfunctioning. The engine turns off when pushing the brakes, mostly when waiting for a traffic light to turn green. This is sporadic and when driving it may happen too, while braking to slow down. I talked to an acquaintance (a retired mechanic) and he commented that the vacuum to the brake or the booster may be the root cause. Has anyone experienced this problem?

Is it an automatic? Take it to Autozone and they'll pull codes for free.
