Rear Brake Job Question

I have to do a brake job on the rear for a friend
He has a 2000 Ford Focus SE (wagon)

I have learned that the rear drum contains the wheel bearing hub.

Can anyone confirm the size of the socket head I'll need to remove it?
I heard 1"1/8 12 point.

If anyone has a good site for a diagram or how to for this process. I'm just not sure if there is anything else holding the drum to the hub.

Thanks

Re: Rear Brake Job Question

yeah was just repeating what I'd found on the net.

I do all my own work for everything after warranty runs out.. so thats about my experience.. .. research, user sites like these and just do it..

I'm rolling over 320,000 on my saturn and only my hands touch her.. lolz... so I guess I manage ok.. I'm lookin at the Focus to replace my saturn in the spring so I figured I'd offer to help out my buddy by warming up on his.. money is tight these days.. Canadian Tire up here told him 750 bucks to do the job.. using premium parts I can still do it for 300 (parts source).. .. he has a leaky cylinder so that includes a new one of those... I'm still going to look for a cheaper supplier first around here though.

Is it common to have the bearing on the rotor hub?... thats a new one for me. its probably going to be a bastard to take off.

So I'm good to go and get a 1 1/8.. I'm not certain I have that size.

Thanks for the replies guys.. love this site!

Re: Rear Brake Job Question

I would go with metric tools on this one, most of the bolts you'll find on american cars these days are metric, and i think for the wheel hub bolt you've got plenty of room to use an adjustable wrench, have you ever changed or re-packed wheel bearings before? it sounds like you should have a look at that procedure before starting this job.

Re: Rear Brake Job Question

$750 for rear brakes is killing me... and $300 to do it yourself seems high too... i know around me pads are only about $35 for the rears and shoes are about $20... do you have drum or disc? sorry, but sounds like they were takin you for a ride... i am in Nebraska in the U.S. and sure you could probably get parts cheaper if shipped...
