Hello!

A few weeks ago I was involved in a hit and run where someone slammed into the left rear corner of my Focus. My insurance will cover it but unfortunately my deductible for this is $1,000. Yikes! I can't afford that currently. They estimated the damage to be around $1,865 to repair, and wrote me a check for $865. So for now, my plan is to just use that $865 and get a new rear bumper slapped on and then later go somewhere and get the remaining body work done when I can afford it.

How involved is it to replace a rear bumper? I was thinking about attempting to attach a new one myself, but my experience with working on my car myself is very limited. Is this something a layperson would have trouble doing themselves?

Also, any recommendation for ordering a new bumper online (painted)? I'm really not picky on the type, as long as it fits.

I don't know, I guess I'm just looking for some general advice here and an idea of what kind of cost I might be looking at.

If you'll check on eBay, you can get a rear bumper cover for under $50. You can also get a Replacement Bumper Absorber for under $50 and Reinforcement (if you need it) for under $100 so your looking at $200 or so for parts. You can take the cover to a body shop and have them match and paint and still come out well under your $865.

So it seems I need to replace to fender too?

Hmm, was shown this one on eBay, but it's $270.00 plus another $70 S&H. Also needs to be painted. I'm not seeing the $50 or cheaper ones.
