Removing front bumper teflon strip

Does anyone know of a way of removing the black teflon strip at the bottom of the front bumper bar? I have read that one way of doing it is to drive up to a gutter that is just a bit higher than the bottom of the stip..... seems a bit dangerous to me.

In typical fashion, the installation instructions for the front skirt only tell you to remove it, not how.....

Cheers

Andrew

Re: Removing front bumper teflon strip

eh he he he sounds dodgy. I'd assume it requires a good hard pull, but lie under the front of the car and have a look mate (assuming you haven't done this already.) It's probably clipped on so as to allow it to break off easily in case..

Re: Removing front bumper teflon strip

I have done this to install my front bar.

Support the higher painted section of the bar with one hand, starting at one side, and with your other hand simply force the teflon strip in towards the centre of the vehicle hard. Continue all the way around.

Just something to note - its permanent. The strip ain't going back on when you're finished unless you get a panel shop to put it back on, as its crimped on. It also takes with it little circles of paint where it was clipped, but not visible unless you're underneath. Do not try to remove it the way you listed in your original post, it will flex the paint on the bar and leave stress marks.

Also, if you are not replacing it with anything else, it looks very weird. You don't realise the effect it has until it's gone. Mine was missing for about 3 months while my kit was being done.

I'll find a picture of my car without it before the bar went on - it leaves a gaping hole. If something else is going in its place, then fill your boots!

Re: Removing front bumper teflon strip

Ok here are a couple pics without the teflon strip before the kit went on and when I still had the old style Euro plates - how I disliked those days...

In a line up, check the sunlight you can see under there compared with the two Foci next to it.

That would be "Zetec" / Matt demonstrating the clearance under the front bar without the strip on. And for all those people that said they would have given me 50 bucks to have moved the car forward a metre at that point,... just kidding Matt!

Cheers... Tim

Re: Removing front bumper teflon strip

For installing the Infocus Front Bar, I also removed the small plastic undertray which allowed me access to remove the lower black plastic grill insert. Here is another pic for ya, brother.

At that stage I was considering replacing the grill with the ST170, but after the bar went on I decided I preferred the OEM grill so it went back in after all, but on top of the Infocus bar, not underneath as I think the instructions detail. It's been a while.

Re: Removing front bumper teflon strip

Thats what it was... mind you, a few extra kw isnt going to make up for your driving ability, if what I saw last time is anything to go by!

There's alot more in the pipeline.... its just a matter of time (and money...).

Re: Removing front bumper teflon strip

Thanks for the pics Tim and the advice too (Matt too). I had a go at it this morning and I got the corner off, so it will just be a matter of working my way around the front. Of course I am replacing it with the factory front bar (courtesy of Matt) and will be fitting it myself (getting a smash repairer to paint it).

At least I now know that it is permanent to pull off the stip. I wonder how those guys in the UK paint their strip and put it back on by themselves??.... not to worry I won't be putting it back on anytime soon :-)

Re: Removing front bumper teflon strip

Not sure.... sounds weird to pull them off as they flex rather badly when removed. I tried re-installing mine until the kit was actually going on after it was re-shaped, but it was not secure on the vehicle.

Once you have started pulling it off a bit more, don't leave it too long to remove the whole thing. I'd be worried it would come off and then proceed to go under the vehicle.

It didn't cost me anything extra to get my panel shop to fit my fibreglass front bar - which including fibre moulding it on due to inaccuracies with the original kit - though I bet after they finished it they wish they did charge me, haha. It's worth hitting them up and asking how much - that way if anything goes wrong, you can always take it to them for nothing.

They are all very basic to fit anyway... we used extra glue and resin to make sure my front bar wasn't coming off. Not that it will stop it being shattered one day - but what better excuse to get a Lumma front bar.

Good luck with it all - and we want pictures!

Cheers... Tim

Re: Removing front bumper teflon strip

They want to charge me an extra $100 to fit it, so I think I will save myself that cost and do it myself.

How low is yours off the ground. The front section will be fine, it's just as it goes back to the wheels that the road clearance is getting small (I measured around 115mm). Guess I'll be going slow over speed bumps!

I'll get some pics up next weekend when I actually fit it. I have some before pics now, but will wait till it's done before I upload them. I swear I will give you some for eurofordclub.com like I have been saying for ages ;-)
