Speedometer problem

Driving home last night and the speedo went straight to zero after working fine. Then after a minute or so the digital miles went off.. I got home, switched engine off, went for a spin, same.. then tried again later and it was fine...

Please... any ideas?? the problem certainly doesnt seem to effect the performance of the car.

Thanks in advance,
Mark

Re: Speedometer problem

I have the same problem and after much looking into it have found that it is the speedometer sensor on the gearbox that needs replacing. Lots of people seem to have this problem including me! About £25 for the part and the same to fit
Hope this helps

Matt

Re: Speedometer problem

You're lucky the gearbox didn't need to come out because the fecking things can sieze in solid, would have turned out to be a tad more expensive....

confused Re: Speedometer problem

I got the same problem. My speedometer hasn't been working for a while and so hasn't the petrol gauge. It reads an incorrect amount of fuel in the car. I only found out when the gauge read quarter fuel and the car run out of it.
Also my heater is only blowing out cold air when it should be blowing out hot air.

Any ideas as to what I can do to fix it anyone.

btw. I got a 1997 ford mondeo 1.8LX.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Speedometer problem

u need to get the engine speed sensor replaced, pretty common on a Focus, the part only costs around £25.00, I had the same problem , i nearly changed the whole speedo, changing the 'Engine Speed Sensor' defo cures the problem !!
