confused Steering wheel lock

I have a 2007 Focus that I pull behind my motor home and when I get ready to tow it, I have to turn the key to the "on" position to unlock the front wheel so they will follow. I have twice run down the battery when towing and I am wondering if there is any easy way to "defeat" the automatic locking of the wheels when the key is in the "off" position. I know this is there to deter a thief (if they want it they get it anyway) but, I am willing to take that chance. Any help would be appreciated. And if it can be done by a novice such as myself, details of how to proceed would be appreciated .

Re: Steering wheel lock

Hi you dont need to have the key in the on position. Theres a spot just as you start to turn the key to the run position. You will have to first turn the key to the run position to put the trans in neutral if your car is a automatic and then back to the neutral spot on the ignition. Your cars steering wheel will be free and no dash lights will be on.

Re: Steering wheel lock

Mine is a 5 speed so neutral is easy. So you are saying to turn the key to the on position and then rotate it back toward the lock position. I have had a key made that will just turn the lock but, will not start the engine for safety reasons (don't want it stolen while towing it and I go inside somewhere and leave it outside). I will go try it. THANKS !!!!
