My 2001 focus has severe steering wheel vibration. It is worse at idle. I can hold onto the wheel to absorb some of the vibration but the dashboard shakes. It has gotten worse lately. In the past several months my check engine lite has been on. My mechanic hasn't found why. He turns it off and it comes on in a couple of days again. He did replace one sensor but it still comes on in a day or two. I have been driving with it on. I don't know if this is related to the vibration or not. They didn't seem to occur around the same time. The vibration is really worrying me. I've just moved and will have to find a new place to take my car for repairs, so that makes it doubly hard. Any thoughts or suggestions?

If the light is on it should have a code stored which should be read to see what is triggering the light .If you are getting the vibration at idle , check engine mountings . Also check steering column for any wear or play .You dont say what size engine in car , petrol/ diesel .

I'd check with another mechanic, they may be able to find the problem. Also, autozone will pull codes for free. Post the codes here.

Check codes at a Autozone, cause IDK why a mechanic would not be able to tell you the code, he has a very expensive machine to do so.

Secondly, what sensor did the mechanic replace?
