Periodially tailgate wont open with external switch. It's not that the switch is faulty (it's clean) but that when all doors should be unlocked (but closed), sometimes for whatever reason the car decides to lock the tailgate, so that it can then only be opened after unlocking by opening drivers door and using rear external switch or opening using the remote fob. Any ideas?

Check the wiring under the rubber gaiter where it passes into tailgate for any broken / damaged wires .

What year make and model is this focus, and how many miles are on it?

And that^ is a very common problem that happens from the wire's being to short, and rubbing.
