It's Here: The New Focus

Auto Express
by Chris Thorp

The waiting is finally over! Auto Express can reveal all about the most important new car of the year. We've got official details and world exclusive pictures of the eagerly anticipated new Ford Focus - a model that's not only faced with replacing Britain's best-seller of the past six years, but also charged with dominating the competitive family car market for a generation to come.

We have accessed all areas of the first two models to roll off the production line, leaving no stone unturned to deliver the definitive inside line on both the three and five-door versions.

The softer lines of the new model are much less radical than those of the current version, and are sure to make less of a splash - but how do the final production models look up close in the metal? As you can see from our photoshoot, the company's designers have been keen to capitalise on the popularity of the current model.

A Ford spokeswoman told Auto Express: "This should be considered as a Focus MkII, rather than a totally new concept. All through the design of the next-generation model it has been a case of evolution, not revolution. We've kept the things that people like about the current Focus - it's clearly got to look like a Ford and fit into the family."

In both three and five-door form, the key Focus hallmarks such as the high-mounted rear lights and sloping tailgates are prominent. However, the outgoing model's new edge design has been replaced by a far more conservative look, inspired by the latest Mondeo.

Arguably, it is a less memorable appearance, but nevertheless it's well proportioned and, in three-door form, is relatively sporty. Look carefully at the finer details, such as the body-coloured door handles and accurately extended wheelarches, and you begin to appreciate the premium feel that the company has tried so hard to create. Open the door, and your first taste of the interior reinforces this prestige image.

Addressing criticisms of the previous model in the areas of ergonomics, cabin space and quality, Ford has clearly been keeping a close eye on what it considers to be class-leading opposition. In terms of quality, the new Focus is easily a match for its Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Golf arch rivals, and also on a par with that of the manufacturer's successful compact people carrier, the C-MAX. Soft-touch plastics and sound build quality provide a solid feel.

But one area in which we think there is still room for improvement is practicality. While the air-conditioned glovebox is a useful size, there is a shortage of additional cubbyholes. In the rear of both the three and five-door variants, occupants will find headroom tight, too.

The lack of height is a surprise when you consider that the Focus has grown in every direction. At 4,342mm, the newcomer is 168mm longer than the model it replaces, while the wheelbase has increased by 138mm over the previous-generation machine.

However, Ford's own measurements tell an even more interesting story - rear headroom has decreased by 4mm. Meanwhile, 19mm has been added to the shoulder room available to rear seat passengers. This additional width means the new Focus is a genuine three-seater in the back, and gives the car an appreciably spacious feel, even when it's carrying its full complement of five.

And the good news is that there will be room for everyone's luggage, too. Both three and five-door models have a wide opening and low sill for easy access, while an absence of wheelarch intrusion in the boot means large loads are easily accommodated. An official capacity of 385 litres puts the Focus at the top of the class for luggage space, and the split-folding rear seats provide an estate car-rivalling carrying area.

So how has the outgoing version managed to maintain its position at the top of the sales charts, despite its dated interior? It's all down to the astounding driving experience, even on the most basic models - and insiders are confident that the next-generation Focus will be even more capable.

A spokeswoman explained: "The new car takes another step forward in terms of driving dynamics." As it uses the same platform as the Mazda 3 and Volvo S40, we've already had a glimpse of what to expect from behind the wheel - but engineers have carried out extensive development work to ensure class-leading handling and even better refinement.

The wider track and longer wheelbase will offer the benefit of increased stability, but guaranteeing a smooth ride on the motorway will have been as important to the company's technicians as restricting cornering body roll. Under the bonnet, the new Focus will be available with a wide range of engines to suit all tastes and budgets.

Buyers who prefer petrol power will have the choice of existing 79bhp 1.4, 99bhp 1.6 and 143bhp 2.0-litre units, as well as a new 113bhp 1.6, badged Ti-VCT (which stands for Twin independent Variable Camshaft Technology). A V6-powered ST sporting flagship will be added to the range at a later date.

With the promise of more torque and a five per cent increase in fuel economy, the hi-tech 1.6 is sure to be popular. But diesel is always a good option for drivers looking to cut their fuel bills - and the new Focus will be offered with the same 107bhp 1.6 and 134bhp 2.0-litre TDCi oil-burners as the C-MAX.

Depending on engine choice, power will be fed through five and six-speed manual gearboxes, as well as a choice of conventional autos or Continuously Variable Transmissions. When the new Focus hits UK roads in January, it will come in the three and five-door guises seen here, plus a practical estate.

There will be a choice of CL, LX, Zetec, Ghia and flagship Titanium trims, with prices tipped to be closer to the top-value Astra than the premium Golf. Official figures are still under wraps, but expect base cars to cost £12,000, with high-spec variants at around £16,500.

We look forward to getting behind the wheel, but our advice is to keep an open mind on the new Focus. If your first reaction is one of disappointment, don't write the latest Ford off straight away.

It wouldn't have been possible for the Ford designers to make as big an impact with the second-generation car as they did with the 1998 original, but we think they have done a good job. Despite the toned-down shape, a more grown-up feel and a higher-quality interior should be enough to keep the Focus at the top of the sales charts.

Re: UK:It's Here:The New Focus

New Ford Focus family

Autoindex.org

Ford Europe has issued the following press release:

THE NEW FORD FOCUS FAMILY
The Ford Focus is ready to debut in a dynamic and refined new shape as Ford introduces the next generation of its popular C-segment family car range.

After six years and 4 million sales worldwide, the current Focus bows out, still popular as one of Europe’s top-selling cars, and still a benchmark for quality of driving and ownership experience in its segment.

From the launch, the new Focus family includes 3-door, 5-door and wagon models and embraces the Focus C-MAX multi-activity vehicle introduced in 2003. Built in Saarlouis, Germany and Valencia, Spain, the new Focus models share tangible advancements in quality and refinement inside and out, offer customers a broad powertrain choice and introduce relevant, affordable technologies, including Blue Tooth™ capability. An elegant 4-door model will be launched in 2005.

The new Ford Focus is the product of Ford Motor Company’s Global Shared Technologies initiative. Sharing elements of its underlying architecture with the Focus C-MAX, the Volvo S40/V50 and the Mazda3, the Focus range benefits from shared engineering efficiencies while retaining its unique character and driving quality.

FRESH, MODERN, MATURE STYLE
The new Focus features a distinctive silhouette emphasised by the angle of the windscreen, and by the fast, sporty rear end design that differentiates it from its primary competitors in the segment. Its lower stance adds to its sporting poise and dynamic attitude, which are not purely visual – an increase in Focus’s class-leading structural stiffness combines with wider track and a longer wheelbase to ensure that in cornering grip and predictable, rewarding handling this car is, genetically, a true Ford Focus.

The shape is new, but it clearly is a Ford Focus, with its Focus trademark high rear lamps and a distinctive side window graphic. It communicates robustness and manufacturing quality, attributes for which the Focus C-MAX has already been recognised.

At the rear, the aggressively sloping roofline is a signature of the Focus 3-door and 5-door bodystyles.

THE NEW FOCUS DRIVING ENVIRONMENT
The solid and reassuring nature of its driving environment clearly signals the driving quality of the new Focus. It invites drivers to make themselves at home, from the high quality instrument panel to the centre console, which is very much the hub of the interior design. The interior creates a ‘cockpit feel’, the sense that the car is wrapped around its occupants and that everything they want is where they would want to find it.

Rich, bright blue is a new interior environment feature on Sport and Titanium models. Combined with medium light colour in the lower half of the interior, the blue tone gives the Focus interior a warm and airy feel.

POISED FOR PERFORMANCE AND DRIVING QUALITY
Driving quality has been a Focus trademark from the beginning. The new Focus extends that strength to encompass the entire driving experience.

A longer wheelbase (by 25mm) and wider track (by 40mm) than its predecessor give the new Focus a sure-footed stance and an improved interior package. Enhancements under the skin build on seven years of experience with the Control Blade rear suspension, and a stiff, new front subframe is the foundation for chassis elements.

Drivers will appreciate enhancements in comfort that have been achieved in the new Focus without sacrificing its signature agility, stability and precise reaction to steering inputs. The new chassis has been engineered to provide high levels of vibration isolation and stable, confidence-enhancing body control, making it reassuringly comfortable even on coarse roads.

The Focus body structure also plays a major role in the car’s driving quality. It has been engineered with a 10 per cent increase in torsional stiffness over its class-leading predecessor. Electric-hydraulic power-assisted steering (EHPAS) on all but 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre Duratec petrol engines makes low speed manoeuvres easier while preserving precision on the open road. And, larger diameter brakes also provide more ‘feel’, enhanced emergency stopping power and longer brake pad life.

POWER AND INTELLIGENCE
The new Focus pioneers Ford’s new 115 PS, 1.6-litre Duratec Ti-VCT engine – with twin independent variable camshaft technology – as part of a comprehensive powertrain line-up.

Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) improves airflow through the engine and delivers more torque while reducing average fuel consumption by up to 5 per cent. The new Duratec Ti-VCT augments the Focus family’s broad petrol engine range that also includes 16-valve engines in displacements of 1.4 litres (80 PS), 1.6 litres (100 PS) and 2.0 litres (145 PS).

Focus also offers advanced, Duratorq TDCi high-pressure common-rail diesel engines. The range features 1.6-litre (109 PS) and 2.0-litre (136 PS) Duratorq TDCi choices, which made their debut in the Focus C-MAX. These lightweight, low-friction engines offer an optimal balance between strong torque at low engine speeds for smooth responsive driving fun and low fuel consumption – the 2.0-litre unit benefiting from Ford’s six-speed manual transmission. To meet and surpass emissions requirements both diesel engines will be available with a Diesel Particulate Filter.

Ford’s new Durashift CVT Continuously Variable Transmission is available on models powered by the 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi engine. Developed by Ford with ZF Transmissions, the Durashift CVT can switch between fully automatic and seven-speed manual selection. It cuts fuel consumption by up to 8 per cent over traditional four- or five-speed automatics. Focus also offers Durashift 5- and 6-speed manual transmissions and the Durashift 4-speed automatic.

Depending on specific market requirements, the new Focus Duratorq TDCi will be launched to the Euro 3, Euro 4 and Euro 4 + Diesel Particulate Filter standard.

RAISING EXPECTATIONS – RELEVANT TECHNOLOGY
Highlights among the new technologies are:
- KeyFree System – interacting directly with the car to unlock it without fumbling.
- Solar Reflect Windshield – blocking nearly five times the level of solar radiation as standard tinted glass, significantly improving the efficiency of air conditioning.
- Adaptive Front Lighting System – technology that guides headlight beams in line with the front wheels. Ford’s approach to - Adaptive Front Lighting – using halogen rather than xenon lamps – makes the option less expensive and thereby affordable for a broader range of customers.
- Blue Tooth™ Hands Free Phones – wireless technology, allowing the connection of mobile telephones, personal digital assistants and laptops.
- Voice Control – hands-free command of audio, telephone, climate control, in-car entertainment and navigation systems.
- Rear Seat Entertainment – MP3-enabled independent audio system available, with high-mounted screen for DVD or games consoles provided in the wagon.

SAFETY IN FOCUS
The new model continues the Focus commitment to safety by offering a comprehensive passive safety system within the strength of a robust, protective body structure.

Focus is constructed from variable-gauge laser-welded panels of dual plasma and high strength steel. Both the occupant cell and surrounding envelope of energy absorbing crush zones have been rigorously tested in virtual and physical form, verified by the most powerful computers in the industry and tested in the state-of-the-art Volvo Safety Centre in Sweden.

The new Focus also offers optional side thorax airbags and inflatable side curtains (from A-pillar to C-pillar) in many EU markets, seatbelt pretensioners with load-limiting retractors and ISOFIX child seat fittings.
Optional adjustable pedals give a made-to-measure fit for drivers of any stature, enhancing comfort and safety.

Re: UK:It's Here:The New Focus

I dont mind the look of the new focus including the interior styling, the only thing I think looks really ugly and detracts from the new focus is that rear end on the hatchback...the current shape looks much better......

I am happy with my focus, i think its shape is still modern and I love it and thats what counts isnt it?

Re: UK:It's Here:The New Focus

The interior has gone very sophisticated. I think they buggered the hatch though - I still think the Mk I is the best hatch made (aesthetically).

I'm sure the interior change will win many hearts of the bland Australian public - which is a good thing for Ford Oz.
