My Ford Projects: 2007 Turbo Focus and 1993 Mustang LX

Hello everyone! I've been lurking about the site for a while and finally decided to join. My name is Bryce Smith. I am 21 years old, active duty army, stationed at Fort Meade, MD. I love Fords, have my whole life. My dad has owned 5 Mustangs throughout his life. My first car was my 93 Fox-body LX (sadly w/ bad transmission at the time). I currently have a 2007 Focus ZX3 turbocharged stage 2 for my daily driver. I've almost got it where I want it now. Here's a bit of a description, history, and pics.

I bought the Focus in Monterey, Ca in February 2007. It had 16 miles on it from my test drive. It's been a very dependable car for me w/ no major issues to speak of (knock on wood). I drove it from California to Texas, Texas to Ohio, Ohio to Maryland, Maryland to Oklahoma, and back to Maryland. I boosted it at 19,400 miles and been boosting strong @ 11psi for just over 12,000 miles now.

Thanks. It's a work in progress. Next on the list is tuning and a LSD. I have a horrible problem with wheel hop, hoping to eleminate that.

re: My Ford Projects: 2007 Turbo Focus and 1993 Mustang LX

Well, It's been a while but I figured I'd update this.

The Focus has had it's share of bad luck over the last 6 months. Let's just say it's been expensive and not pretty.

Here's the first thing to go wrong.

As you can see, something went horribly wrong. The shaft didn't have any play in it so it wasn't like the fins hit the flange. My only guess is that something got by that ITG maxogen filter, all it would take is a tiny pebble. Since I was out the money for another turbo, I just upgraded. I sent in the shattered GT28R and got a GT28RS.

So that's one thing out of the way... Ok, 3 days... yes, just 3 days after I put the new turbo on the car, did the tuning for it, dialed it in and everything, some jacko in a Honda Pilot runs a redlight and hits my front end.

Words can't express how furious I was about that! Insurance covered everything but it still left me without the car for another month. I did get a nice check off the insurance and was able to pick up some new drilled and slotted rotors and EBC ceramic pads, as well as Eibach Sportlines shocks, struts, and springs.

I changed up a few things cosmetically as well, including new ST foglights, eyelids, engine cover, etc...

I've pretty much put it on the back burner for now as I'm building up my Mustang. I do have a 2.3 engine build planned for it within the next couple of years though.

re: My Ford Projects: 2007 Turbo Focus and 1993 Mustang LX

I've also started building on my '93 Mustang. I'm doing a 2.3 to 5.0 HO swap. The 5.0 and AOD are coming out of a '91 Thunderbird.

This Mustang had been sitting up at my father's in Mississippi for over 3 years, not running. I replaced the starter, battery, spark plugs and wires, changed the oil, flushed the radiator, and new transmission fluid. I got it back to running, drove it around for about 30 miles and then made the 800+ mile drive back here to Maryland in it.

Here's what it looked like when I first got down there to pick it up.

Here's what the pony looked like after I cleaned it up, got it running and drove it back to Maryland.

And then the Mayhem began! I pulled the motor and trans two weeks ago and started tearing the engine down. Here's the progress I've made thus far.

The pistons, rods, crank, bearings, block, head, cam, valvetrain, it's all in good shape. No signs of bad wear. I'm parting the engine and transmission out so if you need anything, just PM me and make an offer. I'm going to be starting the build on the 302 next week.

re: My Ford Projects: 2007 Turbo Focus and 1993 Mustang LX

Here's a few pics of what I picked up today. The headers need some TLC as they are quite rusty, but no holes or leaks at all.

Hooker Super Comp Equal Length Shorty Headers

B&M Aftermarket Shifter Adapter for AOD

GT front calipers from a '89 GT

I'm going to clean them up this weekend and get them looking nice. I'll be sure to post pics.

re: My Ford Projects: 2007 Turbo Focus and 1993 Mustang LX

I did a little work on the headers yesterday. Tell me what you think.

Before

After

I sanded them down, primered, cured, painted (silver enamel high heat), cured, and then clearcoated and cured again (200 degrees in the oven for one hour). Let me know what you think!
