biggrin My new and improved 351 XF now with pics!

Well the day has come, I finally got to pick up my XF from the mechanics, in its new 351 and automatic form. It previously had a very worked 6 with a 4 speed manual.

I have to say im not all that impresssed with this apparantly 'worked' 5.8 litre but i think that is the auto and diffs fault is as smooth as anything i have driven, I barerly feel it change when flooring it. But it can arc up the rears a whole lot easier. I should put better diff gears in.

My exhaust is also only a single 2.5 incher, I might need something bigger. The mechanic said when the extractors were joined to the exhaust it lost a heap of grunt.

What size should i get?

It also received power steering and whoa! what a difference. The XF is so nice to drive now.

Photos will be put on later tonight cos for some reason my bluetooth connection has failed. Pics are on my phone.

Cheers

Re: My new and improved 351 XF

Dan, good to hear you got it back. With the exhaust go twin 2.5 to the diff then go a single 3 inch over the diff, it'll go harder and sound really good. With the diff gears put something like a 3.23:1 or a 3.45:1.

At this stage dan, does it go as well as your worked 6 or harder?
How does the torque feel? Bet it rips.

Re: My new and improved 351 XF

good to hear its done, I hope you dont have to many problems with it. didnt they not put 8's in xfs cause the 250's had only a bit less kw at the time? I dunno thats what I got told.
I have a noise in my engine when its revved to 3grand, I dont know if its a big end, but if it is, Im ripping the engine out and saving for an injected 8.

Re: My new and improved 351 XF

The 351 cleveland had around 145ish I think. It does go harder but it doesnt feel it, Damn auto! The torque is amasing, half throttle will spin the 235's on 17 inch rims going around a corner. I havent really tested it out though.

There is a few niggling problems such as the temp gauge stays at half then slowly goes off the high end of the chart in around 10 minutes of idling. Not sure if its the sender or if the gauge and sender is incompatible. The coolant doesnt feel hot when the gauge reads off the chart well it doesnt burn my finger.

I just had a bitch of a time trying to get an air filter on the thing and gave up. The carter carbs are a bitch, The supplied bolt/treaded metal thing is threaded at both ends with a gap in the middle. Guess where the top of the filter sits. Right in the wrong spot. Need to get another bolt tomorrow.
They are the only real problems and other than than it drives perfect. Im loving the smoothness of the engine and the power steering makes such a difference.
It sounds awesome as well when on the gas.
Its not much louder than with my six but you can tell its an 8 so im not yet sure if ill make it quieter or not to avoid getting pulled over.

Chad-definately save up and get an 8 the sound it makes makes it all worthwhile. An injected 8 would fit heaps better and still have some economy.
I wonder how mine will be now.

Pics might have to wait till tomorrow I have to work before i go out now.

Thanks guys
Dan

Re: My new and improved 351 XF

Good work Dan, sounds like everything has come along nicely. Is the 351 second hand, new or rebuilt?
Can't wait to see the pics of the beaut new power plant in its new home.

Re: My new and improved 351 XF

It is second hand.
Im having a few problems with it though. It feels slow. It doesnt help that the carby is screwed and the kick down cable is missing. An engine mount broke yesterday but i dont know why. It is back at the mechanics again now. Ill get it back tomorrow.
The heater pipe treatment lasted 20 minutes of driving until it melted the hose and caused a huge water leak. I disconnected the heater. So so far i am not impressed. With the carby's condition and the extra restictive exhaust system that a different exhaust shop told me was dodgy it is no faster than my old worked 6.
The exhaust is getting done this week and the carby will be replaced and get a dyno tune next week. That should help a lot. Especially after I was told that this engine has had some performance work done to it.

Ill give loading the pics a go now.
Cheers
Dan
