My Xr8 progression

ok I decided to make a topic here for all intrested in progression of my Xr8 with what I've done so far and further finishing ..

Here it was at the start - standard Au1 xr8 with tickford kit in hot chilli red .

I stripped it down to it's bare shell removing basically everything and starting blocking the car down ready for body work and primer the factory paint was extremely thin so there was no need to go back to metal ..
:

I body shaped all the panels/shell and bay to a smooth finish .

Re: My Xr8 progression

also welding in the spoiler holes and rear bezel holes then reshapeing the boot lid with slightly different lines

the shell was then completely sprayed with 3 coats of a high build primer and was starting to take shape coming out extremely flat after the work I put into the panels
:

the bumpers where treated to the same as the body and also had the pinstripe lines taken out and matched in better to the body

the car was then reasembled - except front bar - to try get panels lineing up better before masking up and laying the paint over the outside body ..

Re: My Xr8 progression

the fun then started first using a sealer to start the painting off requires good application and a 1 hour dryin time before colour coats
:

then the base colour I mixed up got layed down being such a light encapsulated mettalic - it needs very good spray application similar to chamelion products then I layed 1 generous coat of gold glass flake over top with 2 more coats of clear to get adequate sanding coverage ..
:

the car was then dismantled and painted on the undersides of all panels and engine bay etc..

Re: My Xr8 progression

with the panels painted back and front I flattened the whole car with 800 and scotchbrite with surface prep paste on the jambs and the car was painted with more clear back and front in one shot ..
:

then I sanded out the odd dust nib with 2000 grit and polished up with farecla g3 and then g10 polish

finally after all that It was ready to roll out my 19's had just come in to replace so I unbolted them sprayed the calipers etc. and put the new rims on and bought the car home
:

the engine was sprayed in ford blue and extractors in heat proof silver paint to clean everything up while it was out then remantled and little things like the air rams where painted in a chrome/metal like paint I made up.

with the paint pretty much finished only the smaller parts to add on this is where I'm at now with interior trimming in the process and neally completed and the other interior will be painted in vynal paints etc.. I will add to this again soon to add any additions I make

hope you enjoy ..

Re: My Xr8 progression

Looks like a fantastic result! By the holes I take it you're putting the rubbing strips back on, but surely it would look better without them?

I look forward to seeing it in the flesh once you've finished, do you plan to show it?
