Hey guys, I was hoping someone would be able to help me out. I just bought a 1987 Ranger with a 2.0 engine. First of all it idles way too fast and then when you drive it, it bogs down and sputters when you give it full throttle. I took it down the highway and she maxed out at 40 mph in 4th gear and just sputtered the whole time. The engine seems very strong. I guess I was wondering if this is a carb issue or possibly could it be the fuel pump. I noticed when I shut it off that a small amount of fuel leaks out of the pump. I think the diaphragm is shot in it. Could replacing the fuel pump solve this issue? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ok, got the idle to slow down by adjusting it on the carb. But she still bogs down when you mash on the throttle. She can barely make it up hills. It almost feels as if something is holding her back and constricting it. I'm baffled any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Before you try a fuel pump, I would suggest something a little simpler like a fuel filter. It defiantly sounds like a fuel starvation problem.
