1991 Ford Ranger Clutch Problem

Greetings all,

Maybe somebody can assist me with this so when I take it into the mechanic, I know what they're going to be doing to the truck.

My truck's engine light came on about one week ago and hasn't gone off. What's happening with the truck is my stick shifter is becoming "stuck" when trying to put it in first. It is almost impossible for me to shift into first and many times I have to start out in second gear just because it's a little easier, but still takes some force. Also, when trying to go into reverse all I get is grinding of the flywheel and I KNOW that can't be good. I don't want to get a new transmission, but I was wondering if I all I could do to rememdy this was replace the clutch? The clutch pedal is pretty soft right now and has almost no resistance.

I've tried the test with the clutch, put the truck in fourth, bring up the RPM's to 2000 and then slowly let out the clutch. It takes my truck about 3 to 5 seconds to finally just die. I'm not sure what that means though.

Any advice, comments, suggestions or help would be appreciated!

Its definitly your clutch...

I'm more of a GMC guy, but thse components are all very similar.

The clutch has gotta be the component that takes the most abuse of anything in an engine. I'm not sure if you've ever seen a clutch but it is a very archaic setup, the longer you ride on that clutch pedal, the quicker its gonna wear out, and eventually become next to useless as you are now experiencing. If you get the opportunity, ask them to show you how the clutch works, I betcha you can't move the clutch setup with your hands or feet, just to put into perspective just how much pressure that clutch undergoes every single time you push that pedal in. Best way to shift is to be quick with it, and never ride the clutch, no good for it at all...

I will make sure to do that 80Sierra. Thank you for the information.

I'm pretty good on not riding the clutch every since I used my brother-in-law's truck and he forced me not to ride the clutch so I just go used to it. The engine is quite old and sounds like it would need something like a clutch replaced.

I will get that done soon and reply with what happens.

Yep, an older engine will wear out pretty quick if you are putting lots of milage on it, mechanical things can't last forever :)

You'll find the clutch setup pretty cool, I certainly did :)

My beautiful and gorgeous black 97 Splash 2WD is the hospital with the following ailments: The check engine light is on and the code says O2 sensors need replacing. I cannot shift at all and the clutch is very mushy. Diagnosis: the hydraulic slave cylinder needs a transplant. I no not believe the clutch is bad, just the hydraulics. Sounds like you have the same clutch problem. This is my second Ranger with this problem and they both surfaced at around 165K. Hope this helps. BTW my Splash has 165K and heading for 200K. Those Toyotas arn't the only iron that can go 200K and my Splash looks a lot better doing it. Good Luck Dude. MrH
