1998 Ranger engine knock

I am a mechanically incline person, but I have no clue about the internal working of an engine. With that being said, here is my problem. I have a knock coming from the bottom part of the engine, but I don't know what is causing it. The engine is a 2.5 4 cylinder with 190,000 miles. What I am looking for is some trouble shooting tips so I can narrow down the culprit and determine if it will be better to fix the problem or replace the engine.
