2002 ford ranger question

i recently failed new jersey inspection for emissions with a P0443 error code. after much research i concluded that i would change the purge solenoid. The check engine is now off, but the truck stalled a few times, that seemed to have worked itself out. Now the truck seems to be using gas at an accelerated rate. Is this normal? does something have to reset itself in the computer and all will go back to normal?
