I apologize in advance if this topic has been covered, but I haven't found a thread that is particular to this issue. I have an '04 Ranger 4cyl 2WD Automatic.
When the engine is cold and I shift from reverse to drive, there's only a couple seconds between changing gears. When the engine's warm and I change gears from reverse to drive, it can take up to 8 seconds for the gear to finally engage. It seems to be gradually getting worse. The fluid level looks fine and it doesn't smell burnt. I have no idea what the issue is, but i'm hoping to look like this guy someday soon >>>>

How many miles are on it? Has the transmission been serviced?

It just rolled over to 89,000 miles. The transmission hasn't been officially serviced, but at around fifty thousand miles the torque converter was replaced by the dealer. I'm guessing they at least replaced the fluid.

Does it do it shifting to drive only or both drive and reverse and does it do it from neutral too?

Yes, it does it shifting into drive or reverse, also shifting into either of those gears from neutral.

There's a bulletin for slow engagement in reverse but not drive. You'll probably have to have a trans shop check it. Has it been serviced? How many miles are on it?

You posted that earlier and I just didn't pay attention to it. To much of a hurry I guess. I guess a trans shop will be the way to go unless someone else has an idea.

The only thing I could think of is that the fluid level is off, I know that on some auto trans they are very touchy in that area, and if the level is off whether it be too much or not enough it won't shift right.

And sometimes if you had to add some, drive it a little bit and then check it again to be sure.
