2004 Ranger V6 4.0L belt squeal

My Ranger with about 108,000 miles has developed a terrible belt squeal. I replaced the idler wheel and the belt tensioner, but that didn''t help. I even tried another belt and it didn''t help either. I can''t find any slack in the water pump, alternator, etc. Anyone have this problem. I''m starting to suspect the water pump may lbe tearing up and causing the belt to slip. Belt dressing only seem to make the problem worse. Any thoughts? I hate to spend the money on a new water pump if nothing''s wrong with the old one.

A few things to check: does the squealing change when you increase the load on the electrical system by turning on the head lights or after starting thereby indicating an alternator problem or if cranking the steering causes it to change indicating PS pump. It's possible to be able to turn thinks like the water pump by hand and it seems fine and still have it dragging at engine speed. I know that back in the day, squealing could have been a wrong size v-belt but that wouldn't apply here as you have the flat serpentine belt like mine.

Re: 2004 Ranger V6 4.0L belt squeal

I don't believe it's the alternator. I'd tried turning on the lights and it doesn't seem to effect anything. The battery is showing a good full charge as well. Turning the wheel sometimes does increase the noise, but the increased noise will continue even after the wheel is straightend out. I'm guess the increased load from the wheel being turned could increase the slipping even if the power steering is fine. I finally broke down and dropped it off at the Ford garage yesterday. I just don't have the time or place (heated garage) to go pulling the water pump and/or power steering pump. I'll post what they find out.
