Hello and good day:

The best ones I have used are the Chiltons, and Haynes.

However both are missing a few steps in each book about "Head Removal"...so I always cross reference them both.

There are a lot of guys here that can run you thru the proceedure, and they are more than will to help.

I agree, those are good manuals. also be sure and have your head checked for cracks. just got done with a 2.9 v6 rebuild and both were cracked. there are good after market heads that are better.

Re: 83 ranger head gasket

thanks for the replies,do I need a manual that is specific to my year? I noticed that the Haynes/Chiltons that I saw on Amazon usually cover multiple years, will they be specific enough?
Oh and will i need to deal with the timing, hence the purchase of a timing light?
Years ago, dealing with my beloved Pinto,a back yard mechanic showed me how to set the timing by lining the rotor up along with another measurement,I believe it had to do with a line on(timing belt?) the front of the engine.Does anybody know this method "for a close enough for me"?
Again,thanks for your help;in advance.

Re: 83 ranger head gasket

You would be advised to get head skimmed if o.k after pressure testing . Setting up basic timing as you were shown and lining up the timing marks on your car will be covered by the workshop manual . A timing light wil be useful for final , more accurate setting as it is done with engine running .
