84 ranger starting problem

1984 Ranger V6 55,000 miles. Intermittent problem, runs fine most of the time. Cranks but will not start, backfires through carb./acts like timing is way off while cranking, has a manual trans.-can drift start and it will run fine, may be ok for a month and then acks up again. Have checked timing, replaced ig. module, dist. pickup, coil, carb.

Is there a cel ( Check engine light ) lamp lit ?
Is it missing under a load ?
When if ever has the plugs and wires been replaced?
Loosing power ? Fuel pump related issues

There are a few possibilities to start off with:

1: Crank position sensor, with your year model, it’s most likely in the distributor.

2: bad plug wires

3: bad plugs

4: fuel filter ?

5: fuel pump intermittent problem.

6: stuck EGR valve. CEL only

7: processor ground and power supply, check connections. CEL may not illuminate.

8: Map sensor. CEL only.

If there is a CEL lamp illuminated you’ll need to retrieve the codes, If there is no CEL lamp, then try the other possibilities.

Good luck……….. Chongo
