Question '86 Ranger 'HOW TO' replace #194 Instrument Cluster Bulb

'86 Ranger 'HOW TO' replace #194 Instrument Cluster Bulb

My left side 194 bulb that lights up my TEMP,OIL,WATER, & FUEL went kaput, but my SPEDOMETER side is fine. I removed my dash plate, and now see the two round lens covering these two units. I removed the larger screws on top and bottom, but this larger piece will not come out. I doubt I have to remove the 1/4" screws on the plastic lens over the SPEDOMETER, and the other left side to get to the bulb, or do I?

So anyway, How many #194 bulbs are on the backside, and what do I need to remove to get to them? The smaller two lens pieces, or the larger back plate?

Autozone has Sylvania two pack for $5.00. Since this is a 1986, I should replace ALL of them, so I won't be having to remove the dash again...the older this truck gets, the easier it is to break the interior trim pieces.

FORD does not stock these bulbs, however, they tell me you can find them anywhere.

I went to LED Lights, Bulbs & Accessories - SUPER BRIGHT LEDS and found colored #194 LED bulbs for this application, but they have an option...90 degrees and 120 degree beam angles....? I don't know if any of the colored bulbs like red or dark blue will illuminate to be worse to see, and getting the 90 degree is all I'd want probably.
As you can see, I removed the four screws holding the back plate on. They are the WHITE LARGER ARROWS with red outline.

This panel will not easily come out. I've done this before, but don't ever remember disconnecting the SPEEDOMETER cable to replace those 194 light bulbs before.

Am I supposed to remove the smaller BLUE ARROWS with WHITE TRIM smaller screws to get behind that left side plate?

Re: 86 Ranger Dash Lights for spedometer, etc?

The cluster must be removed to replace the bulbs. The speedo cable has to be disconnected. The connector 'bends' to release from a groove cut into the speedo head metal where the cable is inserted. There are two multi-pin electrical connectors that snap into the cluster which must be squeezed to release. The bulbs are 'bi-pin' in that they don't have metal bases, just the wires looped on either side of the flat that goes into the socket.

Don't bother to remove the plastic lenses over the gauges unless there is dust in there you wish to remove. I actually learned how to unclip the speedo cable from the dash when the cable had to be replaced. A small plastic 'finger' must be pried up and the cable will slip loose. You should be able to then pull the cluster out far enough to disconnect the electrical connection, which plugs into the back of the cluster. Squeeze the plastic connector to pull it loose. All the bulbs, including the warning lights and turn indicators are all the same. I would replace them all, but I don't recall how many there were total. I think there were two on the speedo side and just one on the gauge side, plus the two turn signal bulbs. The bulbs themselves are in plastic holders in the back that you untwist a quarter turn to remove.
