my 91 ranger xlt starts without having a key in the ignition. any ideas on how to fix this? also, the dash lights and tail lights do not work. after searching the forum though, i've found a couple possible solutions for the lights including: replacing tail light bulbs (which keep the dash lights from working) and possibly replacing a switch. i replaced the fuse for the dash lights even though it didn't appear to be blown, but someone also suggested checking/replacing all fuses. i'll gladly take any more suggestions regarding the lights as well. thanks.

ur lock cylinder(aka ignition switch) is bad.

I had a relative in England a few years back, who needed the key to start his Escort, but after starting, he'd be able to pull it right out with the engine still running. As mentioned, replacing the ignition switch should solve the problem. Just be sure not to tell your insurance company that you don't need a key to start the vehicle!
