97 ford ranger shift lever

I have a 97 ford ranger 5 speed. I am having trouble removing the shift lever.
The service manual says to remove the bolt holding the handle. This is actually a threaded stud with a nut on it. After removing the nut how do I remove the treaded stud?
Thanks in advance

Remove shifter stick from shifter mechanism by removing the hex flange nut on the front of the stick using a 17mm wrench and installing the nut onto the rear of the stud. Tighten the nut to draw out the stud. With the stud removed, pull the shifter stick up and off.
