I have a 99 Ranger (4cyl).

I got quoted a price for a tuneup today for $268.00 from Goodyear in Orlando.

Seems a little pricey to me.

I'd consider doing it myself, but replacing the 4 plugs in the left side of the engine (behind the manifold) seems a little daunting to me as there would probably be much swearing and bloodletting while I did this.

Any "tricks of the trade" as to how to make a DIY tuneup less painful, or should I just bite the bullet and have someone else do it?

Your choice one the bullet. I prefer to save the money. With the right tools, (swivels and extensions) it's not that bad. Before starting, spray some penetrating oil and let it set. When you install new plugs, use anti-sieze. Be sure to keep the wires in the right order. You would be surprised how many do one plug at a time and "know it's right" and still mess up.
