96 Ford Ranger 3.0 L six

OMG! While waiting for a part for emission system. I got the battery icon /light on. First dimly then on steady. My question can you still test the alternator the old fashion way? Leave it idle, remove the ground and see if it runs for a second or two? Still running good alt. No run bad alt. But with these new cars who knows. Although 96 aint new!
Mine does not run. I am thing bad alternator

I'd be careful doing that on today's newer vehicles. Could create a voltage spike and do some serious damage.

Since you've already done it I think its safe to say the alternator is out. I'd have it bench tested before buying another just to make sure.
