Re: Altinator upgrade?

even if he runs a battery seperate from his stock battery he will still need somthing to charge that battery. if i were you i would get the second battery have it wired in a parrell circuit to your altenator and go to jegs and get a high output alt just to be on the safe side. this way your not taking power away from the rest of your electral system and still getting a charge for everything

Re: Altinator upgrade?

I was thinking can I just put a higher out put alt in and a performance batt? would this still supply enough power to the engine?

Re: Altinator upgrade?

you should be fine with a high end alt and good battery. You are probably planning to already but it will also help to use a capacitor with your amplifiers.

Re: Altinator upgrade?

Yeah thats what I thought, but the only hesitation I have is that if I under volt my electrical system it could damage it. Im not shure if this is true for cars and trucks, but I know its so for computers. But yeah ill do the math on what my engien is getting now and beef up the bat and alt according to the extra juice I need to draw from the system. Sound like a good plan?

Im having a dipshit day....

Re: Altinator upgrade?

Yeah, u need a high ouput alt. I've heard you can get em through Autozone, and they're only like 20-30 bucks more than stock ones (w/ core exchange). As for seperate batteries, just depends on what kinda subs/amp(s) ur plannin on runnin. Usually u don't need an extra battery unless you have some sort of show vehicle, where you'll have it sittin around, blastin w/ the engine off. Also, just to throw this our for the hell of it, my friend had an old s10 that he'd put a serious system in, and instead of buyin a high output alternator, he went to the salvage yard and got another old used one, cut off the mounting points, and welded it right below the original alt., he just used a longer sepertine belt, and had both alternators workin at once, just spliced the new b-terminal in with the old one. Course that's if you're really pressed for cash.

Re: Altinator upgrade?

Wow I never thought of rigging two alts together, very creative. But im not that strapped for cash and I dont have a welder, or access to one... And yeah its not going to be a show truck, im only gonna have the stereo blastin when Im running it. Im not going to be putting in huge subs either, just enough to get the chassie rockin. The 3 big things that I have a feeling are going to need the extra juice are my computer system, stereo, and light bars. Thanx for the input, greatly appresiated. And do you know anything about machanics, cuz im just looking for a seperate oppinion on a starting issue and Ide like to consult a fellow gear head about. I already know the problem, but still its always nice to have a second oppinion. This link should bring you to the thread I started about it. Why is she starting so hard?
