Yeah, um, definitely check the codes. you will get some more clear indication if it is either one of these or something else.
It sounds to me like maybe you have a poor running condition and are not sure what inexpensive component to replace first.
A bad crank sensor would likely result in a no start condition as it feeds information to the ignition system to tell it when to fire.
Now the ECT on the other hand most commonly presents as reading the temp too low/ out of range low. What this would do is cause a rich fuel trim, most often causing alot of fuel smell and a smoky exhaust. However, the vehicle should still start.
