Anyone know anything about the ECT (engine coolant temparature sensor) amd the crank?

Basically Im wanting to know what the symptoms would be if each of those would be and is there a way to tell if its bad? This is on a 93 ranger with a 2.3 SOHC with a 5 speed.

Depends on how inaccurate the ECT is. Don't know what you mean by crank.
Do this test to see if there are any codes. http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/OBD_I.html

Yeah, um, definitely check the codes. you will get some more clear indication if it is either one of these or something else.

It sounds to me like maybe you have a poor running condition and are not sure what inexpensive component to replace first.

A bad crank sensor would likely result in a no start condition as it feeds information to the ignition system to tell it when to fire.

Now the ECT on the other hand most commonly presents as reading the temp too low/ out of range low. What this would do is cause a rich fuel trim, most often causing alot of fuel smell and a smoky exhaust. However, the vehicle should still start.
