Burning oil

So I got a 2004 ranger with the 3.0L and every time i start it, especially after it's sat awhile, a big cloud of blue smoke comes like oil is getting into the cylinder somehow, so I'm just curious as to how I should approach this, as in, should I inspect valves to see if ones bent, should I remove the head and check the gasket, or should I take the whole engine out and replace the piston rings? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Agree with RS. I would start with an actual oil consumption test first. Change oil and Mark the dipstick after it sits for about a half hour after running. Drive vehicle say 500 miles and check oil after it sits about half hour. Determine how much you are actually using. Do you know the history of the vehicle?
