Changed Timing Belt and Now Have Trouble?

I have a Ford Ranger 88, 2.3 L engine, manual tranny...it's a no-interference engine, which means there shouldn't be any damage resulting from timing belt breaking. It broke and I've replaced it....just wanted to see if it would start up before putting everything back in (water pump,radiator,alternator)...but it doesn't even turn over. I've set everything dead-on....my friend said to start I have to turn distributor cap differently than my manual recommends for timing....scared to try because I don't want to damage anything....but it does nothing, no spark, nothing. I switched out battery with a charged one and set up cables to another vehicle to start, in case it wasn't getting enough power w/o alternator. Any ideas? Everything else seems like before....Does anyone know also if theres a certain setting for the auxillary shaft sprocket?

Re: Changed Timing Belt and Now Have Trouble?

If I understand what your saying correctly; It's as if here is nothing happening, like the starter is not doing anything? Did you take the ground cable loose from the engine?

The belt breaking will not hurt anything. When setting the timing, take the aux shaft so the rotor button is pointing to number 1 plug wire on the cap. Be very careful setting time, one notch off and it will run like crap. BTDT. Sounds like you have the hard part behind you.

Have a big time,

Re: Changed Timing Belt and Now Have Trouble?

If the starter motor does not turn the engine over, check the ground wire to the engine block, the clutch cutout switch (you have to press the clutch pedal to crank), and the wires at the solenoid. You can jump around the solenoid, but its pretty sparky... You can manually bypass the interior switches by jumping from the large hot wire on the solenoid to the small press-on connector. That will energize the solenoid, and send power to the starter motor.
