Smile Coolant Temp Guage

Hello everyone, i am new to this forum. I just bought my friend's '97 Ranger with the 4.0 and the 5 speed. Even after driving around for a while, the temp guage barely goes up (like it's not warming up). The heat gets hot though....I have alot of automotive knowledge, but i have never worked on this motor....Should i try a thermostat and maybe a coolant temp sensor, or is there something else it could be......BTW, it's not low on coolant....Any help would be much appreciated!!

My ranger definately runs on the lower end of the gauge, and like yours... plenty of heat. From what I have seen here, it is typical of rangers.

Really?...That's odd as hell....I mean it's BARELY past the C...Right at the start of the "normal" zone....I bought a thermostat. Ima put it in tomorrow and see what happens.I think someone might have put a low temp (180) degree stat in it or somethin...all the other guages are right in the middle.....idk......

Ok....I put a thermostat in today and now the guage reads right in the middle at all times.....I had a feeling the thermostat took a shit on me and was running too cool. So i put a new 195 degree stat in it....

my thermostat always reads just a little above the cold side, and it always takes a while for it to heat up
