I'm looking into getting a little used 4x4 for myself. I've heard that depending on what year you buy you will either get a Mazda engine or a Ford Engine. Does anyone know the specific years and engine models?

in rangers and b series after 1994 they are all ford engines and Mazda transmissions. before 1994 in Mazda b series they are Mazda engines. and around 1990 ford switched from Mitsubishi transmissions to Mazda transmissions

while ford engines have always been in the ranger.


now if you are looking for reliability the rangers three engines are very reliable. the 3.0 is considered a roach. cant kill em. (after 95s better change cam syncro every 70,000 tho)

Find one with a 4.0. Last 2 rangers I owned had the 3.0's and was very displeased with them. Had tons of problems with the 2nd one. The 4.0 gets about the same mileage as the 3.0 but has more power.
