any 2.9 but you might need to change some things as some have egr and some don't. if you are mechanicly inclined you could do a 4.0 swap out of a newer ranger or a 5.0/302 swap ranger tech library
5.0,2.3,3.0,4.0 all fit with no major modifications needed maybe some but not much. but you need new transmissions and possibly drive shafts for 5.0 and 3.0.
2.3 and 4.0 and 2.9 share the same bell housing but with the 4.0 you may want to get a new transmission. fact is if it is the old Mitsubishi transmission which it most likely is you may want to go with a newer Mazda transmission.
it is a worth while swap to do any of these but most people opt to drop a 5.0 in their ranger when it is time for a swap.
check out rangerpowersports.com or therangerstation.com for more exact info.
good luck.
