mad Ford Ranger Tranny Problem

I have a 2001 Ranger and would like to know 2 things. 1) How do I tell if I have a 4 speed or a 5 speed tranny on a 4 cyl. 2.5 engine.
2) I started having problems with the overdrive not working and then reverse. Then all forward gears went out. If I rev up the engine the truck will try to move but not much. Does this sound like a full rebuild.

Any knowledge would help thank you.

Re: Ford Ranger Tranny Problem

oh i forgot to add, i was shifting from 4th gear to 5th gear, and i was doing about 45-50...

none of the gears seemed to work, it sounds like its engaging gears in the transmission, but im a COMPLETE amature when it comes to this...but the transmission sounds mostly normal, no different noises that i can tell, but the clutch feels totally different, and im hoping its the clutch, but i dont know..mayb someone has had a similar problem..

thank you for your time

Yeah it shure sounds like you just need a new clutch, the clutch in my 88 is shot to, going to the shop tommorow. Basicaly if your having trouble shifting gears with any standard tranny its the clutch. O and you really, really need to change that fluid dude..... Its just a smart idea, and while your at it you should crack open the differential and change that fluid to, cuz itll be in the same shape as the trannys.

Re: Ford Ranger Tranny Problem

well thats just the thing, its not hard going INTO gear, it seems easy, but its not going into gear at all, because with the motor running, it doesnt even spin the driveshaft, or decrese the motor speed any...there is no grinding. and with the truck off, and it in ANY gear, it still rolls...

some guy told me i broke something in the tranny..how hard is it to fix for someone like me?

Very good advice! Also many tranny problems are caused by worn/mal-adjusted clutch master/slave cylinder setup. Some are adjustable, and some aren't but either way if they are worn it can cause alot of shifting problems. Always replace them as a set...master cylinder and slave cylinder to ensuer that you are getting the full and proper travel of the throw-out bearing.
