I took my truck it to get my lower ball joints replaced. As I drove
it off the lot, less then a mile, I heard a crunching noise and the
front left wheel bearing assembly was dropping bearings on the
ground. I was told by one of the mechanics that they did take the
spline shaft out of the hub (I’m not sure about my terminology here)
to move the wheel out of the way. They said they only did that on the
left wheel, but the right wheel the swung out of the way without
removing it.

There is no way to put the shaft back wrong, but is it possible that
they damaged it? If they tightened the nut down too much, is this
what the result would be? Prior to this happening I had not noticed
any noise from that wheel that would indicate that the bearing was
going. Any insight into this problem would be appreciated. Thank you.

I would really be worried about negligence in a case like this. It sounds like they did not use much care in putting the spline shaft back in. they may have gouged or even moved the bearings out of their seat. Especially since you had no earlier indication or noise earlier.
