I just recently took delivery of my 2006! XLT, Reg Cab, Long Bed, 4 cyl, 5-speed, dark shadow gray. I am aiming for 42 mpg, but my first tank was only 39.44. After the engine is broken in, and I switch to synthetic oil, the mpg will improve. To help reduce aero drag I installed an Extang tonneau cover.

The key for maximum mpg is to put lots more air in the tires, and slow down a little! I do mostly highway driving. I try to avoid or minimize use of the brakes, by looking way ahead to the next light or intersection.

So far, great truck! It's fuel capacity is 20.3 gallons, giving me about an 800 mile range. Nowhere near the range of my car, but not too bad for a 3,000 lb pickup!.................

not bad, another thing you can do is tweak the i.a.c. to wind down quickly when the throttle is not depressed. try not to drive when its to cold outside,look into sum minimal weight reduction for example try not to haul the spare and jack around and other stuff. " ive been runing for 2 years and stil havent recived a flat." Ive heared mixed theories about the tail gate being up or down for wind resistance so sum people get hard covers, a tight clotch or leather bed cover might be the best way to go.
and geting real high quailty lube in the rear differencial helps i hear.
and last tossing in sum cheap octance booster or gas treatment can help but if it costs more than $2 its not gona be worth it for your doller to mpg ratio here.
anyhow these few more things i would aim for 42-44mpg :)

....Thanks Cronicus; So far I'm really enjoying the truck. Yeah, with the extra air in the tires, it really "rolls" much better & longer. The truck calls for Motorcraft 05-20W oil, but I will probably use Mobil 1 synthetic 0w-20 after break-in. Driving mostly freeway trips (not city traffic) is helping --- so far with this next tank of gas I am at 40.22 mpg after 220 miles......
